The following maps were produced using AGIS from the public domain Digital Chart of
the World - now called Vector Map Level 0 (VMAP0). On registration of
your copy of AGIS, you can
request a copy of your country at the level of detail shown here in
the AGIS format, ready for use, for free.
A CD ROM version of the full world data set in AGIS format is
available as well. It is called "AGIS Map of the World". See
here for details on how to order it.
A technical description of what is
contained on the CD is available from here.
As for all maps used by AGIS, these maps are stored in vector form, so
zooming at any level leads to high quality output. Because these
maps are fairly detailed, we extract your data requests from the full
world coverage which currently requires more than 600Mb of storage.
If you come from a large country such as the US or Australia, the
request will be limited to your home state (or any other
state or country that you want) - a rule of thumb will be that we
will not normally send out map files more than about 5Mb in size.
To illustrate how much detail a file of this size can contain, files
required to produce the example map of the Washington area below
use about 2Mb (name detail in this example has been turned off
for display purposes).
The Digital Chart of the World contains details on built-up areas,
major roads, railways, utilities, industrial areas, vegetation cover
(for some coverages), elevation contours and coarse bathymetry for
the entire globe at the level of detail shown here.
AGIS users have complete control over which layers to include in
a map presentation, and the display attributes of each feature.
